Christopher Columbus, a 1492 explorer, discovered the Americas as he was trying to achieve his “enterprise in the Indies” which was supported and supported by Ferdinand (Levine, 58). Levine 58. Columbus was on his voyage to discover an alternative route to Asia through the Atlantic. He discovered more than that: a new land, unknown and with future-oriented opportunities. Columbus’ discoveries were the start and the end of America’s History. His actions, discoveries and encounters with Indians shaped it.
Luis de Santangel on February 15, 1493 was Columbus’ financer. He wrote about his discoveries to him (Levine 59). He then tells Santagel all five islands he has discovered, including San Salvador. Fernandina. Isabella. Isabella. Columbus travels to “Espa?ola” and talks about the many rivers and mountains that support it (Levine 60). He says that the land is “most beautiful” and has thousands of different shapes. The trees are all accessible and high enough to reach the sky. He then goes on to describe graphically the honey, fruits, greenery, and flowers (Levine 60). On his first voyage, Columbus discovers some natural resources. He mentions that the Indians gave him gold and that he wore copper plates to protect Santangel. Columbus discovers new lands, and also the humans who inhabit these lands. He names the Indians people as “Indians”. (Levine 60). Santagel then receives Columbus’s letter stating that there is no metal or weapon, but only one made from canes. Levine 60 also describes Columbus’s admirable shyness and how they ran to get to shore. He describes how loving and generous people are. The events that followed the discovery of the new lands are what Columbus describes vividly. Christopher Columbus is a changed man after discovering the new lands. His good intentions are corrupted by his evil motives. Columbus wrote in his letter that he discovered how fearful and stupid the Indians were. This was America’s first step towards slavery. A few of the Indians who were innocent, now called Native Americans, were forced to return to Spain by Columbus. Only seven of them survived (Levine 61). In his letter of discovery, Columbus states his plans and desires in the final. He discusses slavery, the search for and taking treasures from the New Land, and his plans to convert the Indians into Christianity (Levine 64).
Robert Royal stated that Indians were “portrayed in primitive ways as primitive savages” and would soon be exterminated by Europeans discovering their homeland. Actually, Columbus would prefer that the Indians didn’t exist because they pose a problem to his plans (history.com). Columbus made the Indians slaves by using violence (history.com). They would be used to help him conquer new land and get his riches. Historiography.com reveals that Columbus and his men also brought with them non-immune disease to the new land. History.com says that smallpox would quickly kill the Indian population. The Indians were forced to become Christians by Columbus. “These different peoples should be respected for their culture and peacefully interacted with the Europeans as Royal states.” Columbus’s discovery was disastrous for all of them.
Christopher Columbus is, in conclusion, a hero who discovered America in 1492.
He made the Atlantic Ocean a place for people to live and exchanged many animals and plants. He also brought violence, disease, and slavery to the Indians, making Christianity impossible to take away. The discovery of Americas was what shaped America’s history.
